Monitoring and recording for 100Gb/s networks
Around the world, telcos, financial institutions, federal agencies, and large digital service delivery organizations are actively deploying 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s networks in metro, long-haul, and short-hop data center / cloud environments. The market for ultra-high speed networking is gathering momentum. To meet the needs of customers deploying these ultra-high speed systems we are developing a brand new range of EndaceExtreme™ monitoring and recording systems. These systems are expected to be available for deployment in 2012.
Introducing the EndaceExtreme 100
Our EndaceExtreme™ 100 is an extension to the EndaceProbe™ and EndaceSensor™ product families, providing monitoring and recording support for 100G network segments. By leveraging the same DAG® technology as EndaceProbes and EndaceSensors, the EndaceExtreme delivers continuous 100% accurate monitoring and recording on fully loaded 100G networks segments (IEEE 802.3ba compliant) with packet sizes ranging from 64 Bytes to 16K Bytes, making it a unique system in this emerging product class.
The EndaceExtreme 100 supports a single 100GbE CFP monitoring interface. Captured traffic can either be analyzed in real time or analyzed in real time and written to a local on board disk for retrospective traffic analysis. For efficiency, the processing capability of the system can be scaled up as network loads increase, starting from a minimum 20Gb/s, and going right up to fully loaded 100Gb/s links.
Space, weight, and power consumption
We recognize that space, weight, and power (SWaP) are vital considerations for any organization and, in line with all Endace Systems, the EndaceExtreme 100 sets phenomenal SWaP benchmarks.
The EndaceExtreme 100 uses a combination of purpose-built hardware and commodity multi-core Intel hardware to create a complete solution. It is built on a modular architecture, enabling it to be scaled to suit relatively low throughputs (such as those found in metro FS environments, where latency is the concern rather than bandwidth levels) right through to fully loaded 100Gb/s segments. It can also be scaled to suit specific requirements – to provide monitoring only functions or both monitoring and recording functions as required – by simply adding additional rack units to the configuration:
- Monitoring only: From 2U (min) to 7U (max / fully loaded 100Gb/s)
- Monitoring and recording: From 4U (min) to 31U (max / fully loaded 100Gb/s)
Hardware functionality / capability
At a hardware level, the EndaceExtreme 100 supports:
- 64 Hardware classification rules with automatic protocol stack analysis supporting:
- VLAN
- MPLS
- IPv4 and IPv6 with header skipping
- TCP and UDP
- Support for packet steering, load balancing, duplication, and dropping
- Precise packet timestamping and clock synchronization

Operating System
Like all Endace Systems, the EndaceExtreme leverages OSm (Endace Operating System for monitoring) in order to enable it to function as an integrated part of a centrally managed Monitoring and Recording Fabric. In addition, OSm provides the rich application layer functionality that underpins the Endace Monitoring and Recording value proposition. OSm enables:
- Extensive packet statistics accessible via SNMP
- System health monitoring accessible via SNMP
- Rapid easy integration into existing NMS systems such as IBM's Tivoli

Application support
The EndaceExtreme supports both EndaceVision™ and its network monitoring visibility modules and the Endace Application Dock.
EndaceVision provides organizations with packet-level visibility into exactly what's happening inside their networks. It's equally applicable to data centers and cloud environments as it is to global connectivity fabrics that support thousands of users and hundreds of applications.
EndaceVision network visibility monitoring modules include:- Network Performance visibility module – provides visibility into a range of network performance issues including the ability to detect microbursts at 100us resolution and the ability to detect unauthorized application usage
- Network Security visibility module – provides visibility into network security threats leveraging the SNORT® IDS engine which is integrated into the system
- Endace Latency visibility module – relevant to any organization that is particularly sensitive to latency such as traders and service providers
The Endace Application Dock enables organizations to deploy their own custom, open-source, or compatible commercial third-party network monitoring applications into high-performance virtual containers. The Application Dock can support up to six separate applications, with every application receiving a filtered stream of 100% accurate packets from host memory, or from the onboard disk storage. Application Dock is ideal for deploying applications in the following categories:
- Custom packet filtering classification application
- Trade latency monitoring and measurement
- Network forensics / Session reconstruction
- Application performance monitoring apps
- SIM/SIEM agents.
